Cesar Coelho
César Coelho began his journey into the world of tango nearly three decades ago, inspired by his father. Since then, he has immersed himself deeply in the dance, absorbing the wisdom of the most renowned artists and masters of his time, eventually becoming a leading reference in tango himself. Throughout his extensive career, César has been involved in a wide range of artistic ventures, always in constant evolution and in pursuit of spiritual transcendence through art. Tirelessly, he explores the deepest truths hidden within the language of dance.
Among his most significant experiences is his debut at the age of 17 as a member of the dance ensemble of Juan Carlos Copes and Ana María Stekelman in the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated film TANGO, directed by Carlos Saura. Between 1999 and 2007, César served as a principal dancer in the Broadway production Forever Tango, touring extensively throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. He was also a member of Tango Pasión, performing alongside the prestigious Sexteto Mayor under the direction of José Libertella and Luis Stazo, with whom he toured Europe and Asia over several seasons. In 2007, he participated in the U.S. tour I TANGO, alongside a select group of artists.
César has had the privilege of sharing the stage with the most distinguished tango dancers, including the artists of the tango renaissance of the 1980s in the legendary company Tango Argentino, created and directed by Claudio Segovia and Héctor Orezzoli. During the global tango boom of the 1990s and 2000s, he showcased his artistry as a dancer and choreographer in Buenos Aires’ most prestigious Tango Houses, offering audiences from around the world an authentic and deeply rooted cultural experience.
In 2010, he was invited to participate in the Grammy Awards Gala in Las Vegas, where he accompanied singer Aida Cuevas as she received the award for Best Tango Album, in a ceremony broadcast worldwide.
Parallel to his stage career, César has developed an extensive pedagogical path, teaching classes and seminars at renowned institutions such as MIT in Boston, UCLA in Los Angeles, and NYU in New York City, as well as at prestigious international festivals and within small community settings—always with the same passion and dedication. He was both a key contributor to and a witness of the worldwide expansion and cultural conquest of tango.
Today, at 44 years old, César Coelho is a versatile tango dancer and a highly respected instructor. His training in multiple bodily disciplines—ranging from yoga and Eastern movement arts to modern dance—combined with his deep-rooted tango experience in his native Buenos Aires, provides him with an approach that is both innovative and firmly grounded in tradition. His classes successfully integrate technical movement analysis, sensory interpretation of music, and the essential foundations of this unique art form.
He conceives teaching as a lived cultural experience—a poetic expression of an affective and present world—honoring the longing for connection that lies at the heart of tango. He loves the art first, then places technique in its service, transforming it into language: a language that expresses the poetry of the soul in motion.
